Are You a No Reply Blogger?

Dear Reader,

Do you find it frustrating when you take time to comment on interesting blog posts, maybe even asking a question, and you never receive a reply to your comment?

I do my best to reply to each comment though time does get short sometimes. If you've not received a reply, it might be because you are a "no reply blogger".  Basically, that means that your settings are such that your comments do not include an e-mail address to which the blogger can respond.

I'm not very tech savvy, but I used this terrific tutorial from Robin at Fluster Buster awhile back to fix mine.  Go check out the tutorial, then check your settings.

The fun thing about blogging and reading blogs is the great potential for interaction between reader and writer.  Let's talk back!

Blessings,
Laura of Harvest Lane Cottage

P.S. Just for clarification: When you comment on a blog, the writer receives notification by e-mail. If you're a no reply blogger, they do not give your e-mail in the notification. That means that the writer cannot respond directly to you. If you don't check back at the blog post, you won't know if you received a response. For greater clarification, see comments below.

I received this information which may help you if the above tutorial is no longer applicable.
The directions from this site were not exactly correct. It didn't allow me to go back and switch my site back to my google+ profile. It took me a while to switch it back. I had to to Blogger Help. Connect Google+with Blogger account and under Google+ Followers - Connect Google+ to Blog. I know this is a round about way but there was not links as shown in the directions when I did it. Maybe new or formatting issues that were changed. Thought this may help someone else quickly!

  1. Unfortunately some folks want it that way. I can understand to an extent but it really is hard to communicate any further when you cannot reach the blogger. It can be really frustrating, can't it?

  2. I'm not sure about all this. I would live to know when someone replies to my comments but at the same time I don't use Google+ because of the privacy issues I have with it. I don't want to use that account only my blogger account. Hmmmm, I guess I will just have to keep checking back with my friends... time consuming I know but... I don't like my information out there.

    Have a great day!

  4. Hey Laura, I know I am a no-reply blogger and tried to fix it, but things seem to have changed since the other post. I may or may not have figured out how to re-set my profile to accept replies, but even if I haven't it's ok. I have a bookmark folder titles "regular reads" and I check it every day or so. If you leave a comment I will see it anyway.

  5. Hi Laura. I was contacted by Robin awhile back, who is also one of my blogging friends and super nice. She gave me her tutorial link, it worked great and unfortunately I have to refer to her tutorial now again because Blogger accounts can flip back to being a "No Reply Blogger" from time to time. I also found that being a "No Reply Blogger" may affect your traffic.

    Have a sweet day!

  7. This is EXACTLY what I believe. I love to comment when I read something that speaks to me, and wonder why the one who has worked hard on that post doesn't care to communicate back with their readers.

NOW, my question for you is this: What would you recommend to do get people to comment on the posts I write?

    ReplyDelete
  8. I always try to comment on posts that speak to my heart, encourage me, or make me smile or what-not, because I know that I pour my heart and soul into a post, put my heart on my sleeve, my inadequacies out there--- and feel so empty when no one replies. on the FLIP side, I know JUST HOW MUCH IT MEANS to me when someone takes the time to reply to a post I've written-- even if it's just something like "this was great! Thanks!".
I know the point is that we're writing for God, not for others, not for comments. :) :) But I still try to comment and feel appreciated when I receive one myself ;)

  12. Laura, I know I am a no reply because you told me I am. I went to the blog you posted and tried to fix it, but everything has changed since the merge with Google +. Even if I don't get an email reply, I have a bookmarked folder of blogs I read regularly, so I see responses.

I need things kept simple, because I am a technidiot

  37. Hi Laura, thank you for this post. I bookmarked it so that I can go back and read the Fluster Buster. I don't know the answer to your question. I just assumed my readers were getting the replys that I always leave. This is certainly food for thought.

  38. I am NOT a no reply blogger :) We can talk! :)

    ReplyDelete
  39. Dear Connie,

Do you get e-mail notices when you get comments on your blog posts?
If you do, when you hit reply to respond to the comments, it will either have their name or email, or it will say "no reply".

If their email is there, you can respond by email.

If they are no reply, your response will not go to them. The only way they would get your response is to put it on your blog post in the comments and hope they get it, or to try to track them down by google + or their blog and leaving a comment on one of their posts.

I'm being as clear as mud.
You are set up so that your comments can be responded to by email.
Whether your readers get your replies depends on their settings.

I'm just not sure if we're saying the same thing or not. I'm not the most tech savvy gal out here. ~smile~

Thanks so much for talking back. I'll visit soon.

  43. I am glad you pointed this out. I have found many blogs where there are no replies and I wonder if it is because they are "too" busy or simply don't take the time to reply. A simple acknowledgement doesn't take long. In saying that, I try to reply to all comments but the odd one may have slipped through. With a young one and my volunteer work, sometimes my blog doesn't always get the attention it deserves but I appreciate each and every single comment I receive!

    ReplyDelete
  44. Hi Kelly,
Believe it or not, you're a no reply blogger. I think I wasn't clear enough in my explanation on the post. I need to look at it again. This is what I meant by "no reply blogger".

When you commented, I received an e-mail with your comment.
When I tried to reply by e-mail, it showed your e-mail address as
    noreply-comment@blogger.com.

That means that I cannot send you a response by e-mail. That might be why few of your comments get replies.

I usually reply on my blog post in hope that the commenter will look back and see it. I know that doesn't usually happen though. If I have time, I'll hunt down the person by their blog and either find an e-mail address or comment on one of their posts. Sadly, I don't often have that extra time.

I was able to find yours, so I'm going to copy this comment and put it on your blogpost. I hope that this clarification helps. I can tell that responses are important to you as they are to me.

    Thanks for talking back!

Blessings to you from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ,

    Laura Lane

  46. Oh Laura! I reply on my blog yet I'm clueless (right now) whether or not I too am a "no reply blogger".

Thank you for this teaching-I'll dig in now.

  47. Yes, Susan B Mead. You are a no reply blogger. When I tried to reply to your comment through email, it put "noreply-comment@blogger.com" in your address.

  48. I'm so glad, Ifeoma. I return your hug!

  49. Laura, I like no-reply blogging because I like to get a dialogue going in the comments section. For example, if one commenter has a question about a recipe, others probably have that same question, so if I respond to the question in the comments section, then others can see it as well. If I responded by email, then only that one person would see my reply. And when visiting blogs, I can check and see if my comment has gotten a response from the blogger. And if I have a personal comment to make, I can always find the blogger's email address on their blog. But I know a lot of people who, like you, don't like the no-reply thing. And, who knows, maybe someday I'll change my mind! It's good that you tell readers how to change it, as so many of us wouldn't know.

    1. I can see your point of view, Jean. That's why I reply by email and put a copy in the comments section, too, unless it's of a personal nature. I just never have enough time to go back and visit all the posts that I've made comments on to see replies. Just what works for me. ~smile~

  50. A lot are like that, some only care how many people they get to follow.
On an old blog I had little over 100 but only like 3 commented on my blog.I visited as many as I could in a day but Needless to say it is again all about how many some can get to follow them, not actually looking at there blog.

    1. As far as I can tell, it's all working fine Lady Locust. Go ahead and reply on the blog. I then get notification in my email that you commented. Your email return address does show up, so I can answer you by email and then leave a copy on the blog, too.

There are two advantages to this as I see it. One, you definitely see my reply to you in your email. Two, others can see that I replied to you as well.

I think knowing that a writer will reply makes those considering commenting more likely to engage in conversation.

All is well with you, Lady Locust, as far as comments are concerned as far as I can see. I do value your responses. I'll be over for a visit in just a bit.
